The training that comes before the licence

Firearm Competency Training in Cape Town

Before SAPS will consider a competency certificate or a firearm licence, you must complete firearm competency training against the relevant unit standards. That training is what we do.

Everyone starts with 117705 — Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act. On top of that you complete the unit standard for each type of firearm you intend to own or carry: handgun, self-loading rifle, manual-operated rifle or shotgun, in the private or the business-purposes version.

We train, assess and certify. The SAPS paperwork that follows is a separate job, and our sister service Firearm License Pro SA builds that application for you.

Frequently asked questions

Does this get me a firearm licence?

It is the first step. Competency training and the unit-standard certificate come first; then SAPS issue a competency certificate; then you apply for the licence for a specific firearm. We do the training half, and Firearm License Pro SA prepares the SAPS application.

Which unit standards do I need?

Everyone needs 117705. After that, one unit standard per firearm type you want covered. If you are unsure, call us and describe what you plan to own — it takes two minutes to work out.

I have never fired a gun before. Is that a problem?

No. Most of the people we train have never handled a firearm. The course assumes nothing and moves at your pace.
